What's the difference between THCa and THC? The answer is: a few atoms. THCa molecules have a carboxylic acid group at the end of the chain, affecting how molecules bind to different receptors in the body.
Most of the cannabinoids start off with a carboxylic acid group at the end of the chain. CBD starts as CBDa, CBN as CBNa, etc. Then, through simple chemistry, the non psychoactive THCa becomes fully psychoactive THC through a process called decarboxylation, once heated more than 220 degrees F.
The simple act of firing up a joint and smoking it makes cannabis psychoactive without any chemistry knowledge at all.
